We are lucky to have many excellent, clearly signposted rights of way in our area, but it is inevitable that they are not all in good condition all of the time. At Area level we aim to ensure that all the paths in our territory are well maintained, and this work is led by the area footpath secretary. The footpath secretary oversees five district co-ordinators (we are looking for a co-ordinator for South Bucks), and they have a number of footpath checkers who volunteer to check the paths in their allocated parish or parishes. The co-ordinators and checkers also review any applications to alter the routes of paths in their area, and report their views to the area footpath secretary. One of our footpath co-ordinators represents walkers on the Buckinghamshire Local Access Forum, and we also have members who represent walkers on the Milton Keynes forum.

We ask our footpath checkers to walk all the paths in their parishes at least once a year and to report problems. Depending on the size of the parish, the time involved could vary from half a day up to about three. If they wish, they are consulted about any proposals for path changes. New volunteers are always welcome and are invited to discuss what is involved with either the Area Footpath Secretary or their Local Footpath Co-ordinator.
