Donate a Gate

North Bucks rRIPPLE (ramblers Repairing & Improving Public Paths for Leisure & Exercise) was founded in early 2015 and comprises six active volunteers. Two, three, four or even five of whom go out most weeks on a Tuesday or a Wednesday to improve the path network of North Bucks. Initially stiles were being repaired and improved but BCC prefer to see stiles replaced with gates or kissing gates. For longevity galvanised steel gates are installed manufactured by Centrewire, supported on either side by a timber post. We are now funding the use of UC4 treated redwood posts from Briants of Risborough, guaranteed for 15 years. From July 2017 these posts are being provided with additional rot-at-ground-level protection by sleeving with Postsaver bitumen and plastic sleeves. We tamp the posts firmly into the ground with copious quantities of 20 and 40 mm stones rather than soil or clay. Whjere necessary strainers are installed if barbed wire or sheep-proof wire netting needs to be tightened. The Donate a Gate scheme has already paid £2,500 to BCC to purchase gates and a further £1,800 to Centre wire for a delivery of gates. Between April 2016 and April 2017 we installed 42 gates and in total by the end of December 2017 we expect to have installed very close to 100 gates. The North Bucks rRIPPLE coordinator is Bill Piers, 01844 290923 or 07799 110128 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The Donate a Gate (DaG) scheme has taken off with numerous parishes now realising that there is actually someone else out there other than the local authoritywith whom they can deal and get things done. On 18 Jan 2017 Oving Paths Action Group (OPAG) was formed in the Black Boy public house. This group of parish councillors and concerned residents, walkers and dog walkers had produced a report high-lighting some fifty problems on Oving's footpaths. On the same day, 18 Jan, we replaced one stile with a self-closing timber gate kindly sponsored by the resident landowner through the DaG scheme complete with a plaque. Full details can be found in the relevant activity report below, Parishes with which we are actively involved include Buckland, Hardwick, Great Horwood, Mentmore, North Marston, Oving, Pitchcott, Preston Bisset, Westcott and Whitchurch with improvements in Wing and Wingrave pretty much complete. A resident of Whitchurch is keen to form an equivalent of OPAG for Whitchurch.

NB rRIPPLE work load - Current situation - last updated 12/04/18:

  • Donate a Gate (DaG) opportunities and recent work orders (CAMS) from BCC:
  • Brill: Potentially several. Need to get a Brill Paths Action Group (BPAG) formed. “Localism” being led by Ramblers member by Elaine Horsey.
  • Buckland: FP13 at SP887125; FP8 at SP888125.
  • Cuddington & Nether Winchendon: Potential for several awkward stiles to be DaGs. Need a local hero.
  • Dinton, Ford & Upton: “Localism” being sought. Several residents have mentioned several awkward stiles in Dinton but no firm commitment has been forthcoming from them or the PC. Contact made with farmer on the path between Dinton Castle and Eythrop to replace a number of poor stiles with gates during 2018.
  • Hardwick: FP1 at 803196 and SP804196.
  • Hoggeston: “Localism” provided by Bruce Hyde, Jonathan Owen, George Morris and the PCC. Looking forward to some action during 2018.
  • Ickford: Aylesbury Ramblers DaG agreed at SP649076 opposite Rising Sun pub.
  • Ivinghoe at Ashridge Estate: Replace old timber KG with a new Marlow PG. This is a Chiltern Society DaG that we are installing for them.
  • Ludgershall: Three at Tetchwick Farm at SP671182/674184/678191.
  • North Marston: SP765224 and 767226.
  • Oving: Oving Paths Action Group (OPAG) have 4 DaGs in hand with sites to be advised.
  • Pitchcott: FP2 at SP774204.
  • Preston Bissett: Following installation of seven gates on Copperhorse Farm, not all by NB rRIPPLE, at least three more available for DaGs, one at SP665295 and two at SP660296 on the edge of the cricket pitch. Landlord of The White Hart is looking for local heroes to help develop some circular walks. Our Peter Smith working on a leaflet.
  • Waddesdon: FP1 at SP727179.
  • Westcott: PC DaG agreed on FP33 at SP720168. Another site available for DaG FP12 at SP719170.
  • Whitchurch: FP58 at SP802205 and potentially another right beside it.
